Republic of San Marino

Republic of San Marino

Republic of San Marino is a small republic situated on the slopes of Mount Titano, on the Adriatic side of central Italy between the Emilia-Romagna and Marche regions and surrounded on all sides by the Republic of Italy. It is the smallest republic in the world: its total area is 61 km².
In 2008 Mount Titano and the historical centre of San Marino were designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.
San Marino is the oldest Republic in Europe and every year a large number of tourists come to visit its historic center with the typical shops, the ancient squares, palaces, museums, churches and the well preserved medieval stone houses.
Mount Titano, with its three summits crowned by ancient triple fortifications, may be seen from many miles away. The Three Towers are connected by walkways and offer to visitors a spectacular panoramic view.
In San Marino you can also enjoy its food and wine tradition. Walking through the streets of the old town, you can find a wide selection of restaurants and pubs, where you can taste the local dishes and wines. The cuisine of San Marino is extremely similar to Italian, especially that of the adjoining Emilia-Romagna and Marche regions and offers a big choice of local products ranging from wines to cheeses, liqueurs that are popular worldwide.
