Getting around by bicycle is the best way to fully enjoy and experience the beauty of Ferrara; a place where history has become totally intrinsic, with unique features that make this small town a little gem worth discovering. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the town centre houses many important monuments, museums and historical buildings. A visit to Ferrara could begin at Este Castle, which was built from the 14th century onwards and is surrounded by an ancient moat. A second top sight is Ferrara Cathedral, construction of which began in the 12th century, and its unfinished bell tower, which was designed by Leon Battista Alberti. Getting back on the saddle, we recommend heading to Palazzo Schifanoia, commissioned in 1385 by Alberto 5th of Este. This truly original residence is unique in Italy’s artistic heritage; visitors will be left open-mouthed by its magnificent series of frescoes. In particular, the famous ‘Salone dei Mesi’ houses one of the most important series of frescoes of the Italian 15th century. Visitors should continue cycling as far as the home of the poet Ludovico Ariosto, another emblem of the city of Ferrara. Visitors can continue to Palazzo dei Diamanti, which is so named due to the characteristic shape of its exterior walls; it is one of the city’s most famous monuments. On the first floor, it hosts the National Art Gallery, which houses wonderful paintings from the Ferrara school, dating from the 13th to the 18th century. If you aren’t too tired, end your visit on a high with a last cycle ride along the ancient walls of the city of the Este family. For info: www.ferrarainfo.com
